Grades Pre-Kindergarten to 6

Although each item includes a suggestion for the appropriate grade level, many of the books have a general appeal. For example, The Jazz Fly has been enjoyed by sixth graders as well as students in kindergarten, and some of the books suggested for grades 2-5 appeal to the younger grades if read aloud to them. Some of the books may be out of print but are included here, as they are worth reading and can be found in some libraries.

Grades 6 to 12

Although each listing includes a suggestion for the appropriate grade level, many of the books may be of interest to a younger or older student depending on reading ability, background knowledge, or musical training in jazz. This website, also has an annotated bibliography for grades K-6 that includes books that would appeal to someone in the upper grades who is reading about jazz for the first time, and who would like introductory “user-friendly” background information.
